  • Stand in front of a plain, light wall, about half a metre away from it
  • Face a window or soft light: no shadows on your face or the wall
  • Ask someone to take it at eye level, about 1–1.5 m away, or use the 3-second timer
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open, no glasses or hat

The official rules

Photo size50 × 70 mm
Digital fileat least 715 × 1000 px, at most 2000 × 2800 px, up to 4 MB, JPEG
Head size31–36 mm, chin to top of head
BackgroundPlain, untextured white
GlassesOK if eyes clearly visible, no glare
How recentTaken in the last 12 months
EditingNot allowed: no filters, retouching or background changes

The official rules don't allow digital changes such as replacing the background, so the app checks your background instead of changing it. If it fails, retake the photo in front of a plain light wall.

Online or paper application?

For an online PR card application you upload a digital photo: a JPEG between 715 × 1000 and 2000 × 2800 pixels, 4 MB or less, on a plain white background. For a paper application you mail two identical prints, 50 × 70 mm, with the head 31–36 mm from chin to crown. This tool makes both: the digital file and a 4×6 in print sheet.

Note that IRCC's instructions say the photo should be taken by a commercial photographer, and a photo of a printed photo is not accepted. You can use this tool to check and resize a photographer's digital file so it meets the online limits.

Other Canadian photos

Visitor visas, study permits and other IRCC applications use a different size: see the Canada visa photo. For a passport, see the Canadian passport photo.

How it works

  1. Choose your country and document. The app loads the official size and rules.
  2. Take a photo with the on-screen guide, or choose one you already have.
  3. The app finds your face, crops the photo to the exact size and checks it against the rules: head size, centring, tilt, background and more.
  4. Download the digital photo for online forms, or a 4×6 in print sheet to print at any photo lab.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The face check runs inside your browser. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the face-detection software from Google's MediaPipe service; your photo itself never leaves your device.
